Buying that special baby shower gift for your niece or nephew can be a daunting task. However, there is one gift that will say something about how much thought and effort you put into that special present as well as last them a lifetime; a simple no sew baby blanket.
All the other gifts sitting on the shower table will be the standard bottles, pacifiers and other necessary equipment needed for taking care of babies. However, your present will be extra special because you made it yourself and you know it will be used for many years to come.
Of course, you can by any old blanket from the local department store, but making it yourself will be much more personal and will require only a small amount of your time.
The first thing you need to do is select the material that will be soft to the touch, washes up nice and last for years. Polar fleece is one of the best materials to use for baby blankets because of its long lasting durability and ability to keep the baby warm.
Next, you want to find just the right theme and color scheme to create your baby blanket. any fabric store will have a wide selection of colors and patterns to choose from. you will be able to select from various subjects like; comic book heroes, cowboys and monster trucks for boys to fairies and princess themes for girls.
After you have decided on the special theme, you will want to select a complimentary piece of fleece for the backing of your patterned section. Doubling up the two pieces together will make the blanket extra warm and cuddly for years. you will need to have the pieces cut into about 1-2 yards in length for each piece. the size of the material will define the size of blanket you want to make.
When you are ready to begin making the blanket, lay each piece on a flat surface like a card or dining room table. the sections will need to be stacked on top of each other with the pattern piece on top. using a sharp pair of scissors, you will need to cut about a 3 by 3 inch square section of the first corner of the material.
Next you will begin cutting both pieces of material in unison. begin cutting 3 inches into the material with each strip about 1 inch wide. Once you have cut about ten strips, begin to tie the pieces together double knotting them so they stay secure. Continue this process until all the four edges are tied together.
After you have completed cutting and tying off the strips, stretch the edges so the blanket lies flat on the table. Finally, dry the blanket 10-15 minutes on the fluff cycle to complete the process.
A simple no sew baby blanket can be the greatest gift for your niece or nephew because you made it yourself and it will provide many hours of joy.
