Razor Burn: Avoiding Skin Irritation When Shaving

Razor burn is a skin irritation that can occur when you shave with a razor. it usually disappears after several hours but might remain for several days depending on how sensitive your skin is and can reoccur if you keep irritating your skin with repeated shaving.

I’ve found that when shaving with a razor – or even with my electric shaver – my skin thanks me when I take a few precautions before starting to shave.

    1. I shave after having a shower so that my skin gets moist from the shower steam before feeling the effects of the razor. 2. I wait about 20 minutes after getting up before I shave to allow body fluids that have welled in my face during the night to disperse. also, I shave after exercising rather than before so that my sweat doesn’t irritate my skin.3. I don’t use dull, worn razors. I use new, sharp razor blades and discard them before they get blunt. With regards to my electric shaver, I clean the blades regularly to keep them free of shavings.4. I wet my skin and then lather my skin with a good quality shaving cream or gel and let it sit on my skin for a few minutes before shaving. 5. I use short strokes when shaving rather than using long strokes to avoid pressing down too hard on my skin.

I don’t use aftershave following each shave, instead opting for a men’s skin moisturizer which I find quite useful especially during the cold winter months.

Even when using my electric shaver, I’ve sometimes found in the past that I get minor razor burn especially on my neck if my skin is a bit dry. having said that, I got a new electric shaver with a built-in shaving gel dispenser and it has totally eliminated any skin irritation.

Layering Fragrances: Make Your Own Signature Scent

Combine a Citrus and a Green fragrance, or a Floral and Oriental. there are many ways to combine perfumes to make a unique fragrance, but there is an art to this. Combining the wrong fragrances can end with something that will have people asking what perfume you’re wearing, and not in a good way.

The term layering fragrances can mean just wearing the same fragrance in different forms, such as body wash, perfume and shower gel. but you can also layer fragrances by combining different perfumes and make a signature scent. The best way to start is by adding fragrances very gradually. A popular fragrance combination is a Floral perfume and an Oriental perfume, commonly dubbed Floriental. I tend to like this combination as it is a perfect mixture of sweet and sensual. start with the more delicate fragrance, and spray a little on your wrist. Then, add a small spritz of the more intense fragrance, and rub your wrists together. A good example of a combination is something like Euphoria by Calvin Klein, which is very light and gentle. Spray that first, then add a tiny bit of whatever Oriental fragrance you choose. something like Opium by YSL would be a good choice. Feel free to be creative. most perfumes in the Oriental and Floral families work well together as a combination.

Try combining a Green fragrance with an Oceanic fragrance. They are both clean and fresh and inspired by the outdoors, and compliment each other very nicely. Some good combinations are Chanel No. 19 with cool Water by Davidoff, or Sung by Alfred Sung mixed with Giorgio Beverly Hills Ocean Dream.

If you want to be daring, try matching a Woody (Chypre) or Spicy fragrance with a Floral one. Spicy and Woody fragrances go together well, since they are both warm, musky and comforting. but adding a Floral fragrance to either of them will make a truly unique signature scent. try something like Ralph Lauren Romance with Lancome’s Tresor, or Chanel No. 5 with Chanel Coco. Chypre and Spicy fragrances can be overpowering if you spray too much, so use be careful to use it very modestly.

Remember, there are no rules in layering fragrances, so feel free to let go and be creative. use your judgment and spray lightly. It is always better to smell of no perfume than bad perfume.

Benefits and Drawbacks of Antibacterial Gel

I’m a little leery of this antibacterial craze. My dish soap proclaims it. so does the shower gel and hand soap. when I go to the market, there’s antibacterial wipes, and now we see a proliferation of the gel everywhere we turn. It’s lauded on TV and in print. Doctors recommend it. still, I wonder if it’s wise.

Benefits of Antibacterial Gel: there are plenty of times I’m glad the stuff exists. when our younger daughter lived at home, she had a horse. I would go and help her care for it, which can be very messy. Shoveling horse apples is not exactly the most sanitary thing to do. when we’d get done cleaning the stall and caring for the horse, we’d both use some of the gel before touching anything else.

There are a few other times when I find it useful and a good idea. Wiping down the grocery cart can do more than prevent the spread of H1N1, it can also get rid of germs and bacteria from improperly handled meat. when I turn in my recycling, it comes in handy as well.

Drawbacks of Antibacterial Gel: Is it possible to be too clean? I’m thinking so. if you remember a popular book and movie, War of the Worlds, the aliens are killed because they had no immunity to the diseases on this planet. unless we have a vaccine for it, about the only way to get antibodies is to catch the illness.

I’m not recommending that you go out and purposely get sick. That’s both foolish and dangerous. I am saying that if we sanitize everything we touch, we could be creating problems for ourselves and our children.

While most people are grossed out by a comment my grandfather used to make, it has some merit. when we complained about a speck of dirt, he would say you have to eat a peck of dirt before you die. Let’s not get so finicky we end up doing ourselves more harm than good.

Celebrity Fragrances – A Review of Sean John’s Unforgivable

Many pop stars and singer have delved into the world of having their own fragrances, once one jumped on the band wagon many more soon followed, and now there are a vast amount of celebrities that have branded fragrances out there on the shop shelves. I have to say I have tried my fair share of these scents and not many impress me at all, they tend to be weak, short lasting and not very memorable. overall they are nothing to write home about.

However I can make on exception to this list and that is Unforgivable by Sean John, at first I was very wary at buying the scent because of its price tag. You see, most celebrity fragrances carry a low, inexpensive price but this was quite expensive reaching the levels of the Armani’s and Versace’s. anyway I thought I might aswell give it a go and I wasn’t disappointed.

Unforgivable is probably best for the colder, wintery periods rather than warm summer days. with a crisp citrus scent that gives warmth and a great dry down time that last throughout the day I was really impressed. the first scent that comes through is a lemon, fruity explosion that is strong but doesn’t cross the line to being too overpowering like some fragrances can be. This scent gets all the balances right and best of all it smells absolutely fantastic.

I have also noticed that there is a shower gel on the markets now, again quite highly priced, but after trying out the fragrance I’m definitely up for giving the shower gel a go, and hoping that it doesn’t take anything away from my first and overall impression of Sean John.

It is a fact that men and women with dry skin don’t retain scents as long as people with oily skin. this is due to the fact that oils in the skin join with the perfume oils thus making it a slower process of evaporation. Solution: reapply your preferred scent once or twice a day or use a good moisturizer before applying your fragrance.
  6. Allow the scent to dry. many people put on perfume and immediately dress, which rubs some of it off and prevents the fragrance from really being absorbed. it takes about an hour for the perfume to develop with your natural scent.
  7. Many men and women are not conscious of the different scented body products they use – shampoo, conditioner, body wash, body lotion, deodorant, after shave balm, etc. – they use them all at once which causes a mess of smells. it is almost impossible for the perfume to really stand out or even last long when it’s mixed with everything else. So, if you want to make your perfume or cologne last longer, then layer it. use body products scented preferably like your perfume or better yet products from the same brand. Start with a shower gel and then seal the scent with body lotion or after shave and finish by locking it all up with your favorite fragrance.
  8. Be aware of the weather. On hot summer days, scents tend to last longer whereas cold weather has the exact opposite effect. So, vary the amount of perfume you wear with each season.

Now you know what to do, but it isn’t everything if you don’t know what NOT to do. Here are some pointers you should watch out for:

  1. Don’t perfume with clothes or jewelry on. Some fragrances do tend to stain cloth, metals and pearls, ruining your favorite apparel. also, you are perfuming yourself, not your clothes.
  2. Don’t rub your wrists together when applying perfume in this area, since the scent does change considerably.
