Couture Versus Ready-to-Wear

What’s the difference between couture and ready-to-wear?

It’s a question that’s been hitting my inbox a lot of late from women all over the world. they may have been reading high fashion magazines like W or Vogue or are thinking about upgrading their wardrobes, and are wondering what, exactly, the difference is between these designer categories.

Basically, it boils down to fit – and money.

* COUTOUR (koo TOOR) is the French word for sewing. Couture clothes are those that are fitted and sewn specifically for a client, often requiring several fittings for an exacting fit. the clothes may be specifically designed for the client, such as a one-of-a-kind wedding dress or a one-of-a-kind red carpet ensemble, or they may be part of a designer’s couture collection, which are the pieces the designer shows that are available for custom fit.

Typically, couture pieces are made of fine fabrics or feature extensive hand work (like beading or embroidery) that drive up the price to thousands or even tens of thousands PER PIECE. because of the cost, couture clothing, which once had 35,000 regular customers during its heyday after World War II, has an ever-shrinking regular buying base of about 1,200 people worldwide today.

Couture is also known as made-to-measure or bespoke (British).

* HAUTE COUTURE (oht koo TOOR) means high sewing, and is the term reserved exclusively by those European fashion houses that offer made-to-measure apparel in or around Paris and belong to the Fdration Franaise de la Couture (which began as the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture in 1868 by Charles Frederick Worth). Following strict guidelines regarding number of pieces shown per collection and number of collections shown per year, current members include venerable fashion houses like Balenciaga, Chanel, Herms, and Valentino.

* READY-TO-WEAR, or prt–porter (prt a poor TAY) is designer apparel that’s made ready-to-wear in standard sizes and sold through boutiques, better department stores, mail order, and online. while consumers can have pieces tailored to fit after purchase, customization is not included in the cost of ready-to-wear apparel. many brand-name designers, like Vera Wang and Carolina Herrera, only show ready-to-wear collections, but still create a handful of couture pieces upon request for influential clients.

So when you read in a fashion magazine or hear on television that designers are showing their ready-to-wear collections, you know that those are the pieces that you’ll find in their boutiques or in department stores come the new fashion season. Couture collections are those shown to high-paying clients who either go to the fashion house directly to be fitted, or who order from the designer’s look book and have pieces made up from the measurements the designer has on file from the client’s previous fittings.

If you like to read the society pages to see who’s wearing what, you’ll notice that socialites who can afford to buy couture often say so. the caption under a photo might read, Jane Doe in Versace, Susan Smith in Donna Karan, and Tiffany Jones in Givenchy couture. Translation? Jane and Susan bought their gowns ready-to-wear, while Tiffany had hers custom made.

So should YOU indulge in designer labels as your income allows?

Yes, designer labels have a certain cachet and are associated with an elevated income, and yes, you can look like you have a lot more money than you do by buying your favorite labels at discount designer websites or at overstock retailers like TJ Maxx and Marshall’s.

But you have to be careful of the message you’re sending.

If you’re a receptionist dressing like a jet setter, it will raise eyebrows – particularly your employer’s. your boss may wonder how you’re funding your clothing obsession. are you living in a dive and driving a junk heap? Maxing out your credit cards? Skimming a little off the company coffers (which is how one fashionable thief was caught, showing up to work every day in designer apparel)? whatever the reason, unless you’re very vocal about how you cleverly come by your high-end finds, your luxury image may have your higher-ups questioning your ability to handle money – and stall your career in its tracks.

Similarly, if you have a job with a typically high income (doctor, lawyer, stock broker) but are running around in discount apparel, you’ll have people wondering just how bad you are at your job that you’re not able to afford nicer things. true, illness, school loans, job losses, and other financial hardships happen, even to people with high incomes. but if you’re dressing discount in a designer environment, people will begin to question your ability -and your income will suffer. Call it human nature.

So how can you dress appropriately for your income WITHOUT raising eyebrows? by keeping the number of labels you wear in line with the amount of your paycheck.

If you have a lower income, one or two pieces by your favorite designer (like a jacket or pair of jeans) would not be out of line – provided you buy them second hand (like on eBay) or at an overstock outlet like Loehmann’s or TJ Maxx.

Have a higher income? A status handbag, watch, or pair of shoes will instantly telegraph your position. even if you don’t care about such things, your status-y clients will, and since people talk, you may be surprised by how your business grows by adding a few of these pieces to your wardrobe.

And who knows? If you play the game right and meet your goals, you may someday find yourself seriously contemplating whether you should buy a special piece ready-to-wear, or have your favorite designer whip it up just for you from his couture collection.

Beautiful Bows For Weddings

Bows are always romantic, and therefore are a natural element to include in a wedding. They can be used to enhance everything from the wedding gown to the bouquets to the reception decor. though often traditional, bows can also be used in ways that are fresh and contemporary. This is a look at the many ways in which you can use beautiful bows to make your wedding even more special.

Bridal gowns have been a traditional place for bows for as long as there have been brides. They grew to massive proportions during the 1980s and early ’90s, with a resulting anti-bow backlash as everyone recovered from the horror of one too many enormous butt bows on wedding gowns. Happily, bows are back big time, only now they are being used in ways that are fresh and modern. there is a bow-bedecked bridal gown out there for almost every bride.

Classic brides will enjoy the tailored bows on wedding gowns, just as they love wedding favorites like sets of pearl bridal jewelry, roses, and string quartets. Bows on a dress are the perfect accompaniment to classic accessories such as pearl bridal jewelry sets. these bows are often small and streamlined, running down the back of a simple silk wedding gown. They may be the only ornamentation on the gown, or the bows can accent details like bustled train or one with pick up details.

Bows are also being shown in very chic and dramatic ways. perhaps one of the most sophisticated would have to be the Fall 2010 Vera Wang bridal gowns which are accented with black bows in a sheer fabric. nobody could accuse those bows of being old-fashioned or too sweet Oversized bows on wedding gowns have also returned, but they are being used in more stylish ways than the past. One statement-making bow can adorn the hip of a silk taffeta wedding dress, or a chiffon bow can cascade over the shoulder of a trendy one shoulder gown. Unlike in the past, the impressive bows are allowed to be an integral part of the design of the gown, rather than one more embellishment tacked onto a gown already loaded with lace, beading, and other adornments. This is what keeps the look contemporary.

Pretty bows are always welcome at the wedding ceremony. They make wonderful decorations for the ends of the pews or rows of chairs. The most traditional bows are created from white tulle, but they can also be made from a wide satin ribbon, in any color that you like. Add an extra dimension by wrapping the aisle bows around small bundles of flowers or even fragrant herbs like lavender. of course the bridal bouquet is likely to have a bow on its handle. One of the most chic effects is to wrap the stems of black and white anemones with a white satin ribbon adorned with a row of small tailored bows. This striking bouquet is absolutely gorgeous for a black tie wedding.

The wedding reception will offer plenty of additional opportunities to tie one on (a bow, that is). Think about slipcovered chairs wrapped with a pretty organza bow in a contrasting color or ribbons wrapped around each tier of the wedding cake. A fantastic cake topper is a dramatic fondant bow with streamers cascading down the tiers of the cake. once you get started, you will find that there are many wonderful ways in which to decorate your wedding with bows.

Pros and Cons of the Tempur-Pedic Mattress

As unbelievable as it sounds, the story of how the Tempur-pedic mattress came to be starts at NASA. That’s correct.the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. During the Sixties, NASA was trying to create a material that would help lower the effects from g-forces that astronauts have to deal with. in the end, the called this advanced product temper foam.

Since NASA never put the material to use they decided to release the formula so various private companies could use it in their products. unfortunately, at this time the process for developing the foam was not complete, making it impractical and hard to produce.

However, a group of Swedish scientists working for Fagerdala World Foams saw the potential application of the material for use in mattresses. these scientists spent over a decade along with millions of dollars of their own money developing an entirely new type of sleep surface. they called the temperature sensitive material they created TEMPUR and a little while later they had it patented.

The production process of a Tempur-Pedic mattress is somewhat complicated. it involves putting together different memory foam layers along with other commonly used materials in a mattress. the final result of this process is a quality bed that’s comfortable and has better support than regular innerspring mattresses.

How can this be done? it starts with the top layer or comfort layer that has a softer TEMPUR material designed to adjust to your unique body shape. it conforms to your size and weight. after lying down you sink further into the second layer which is the support layer. it absorbs your weight and redistributes it evenly over the surface of the bed.

Last comes the base layer. It’s the strongest because it must provide a solid foundation for the bed. This layer usually isn’t made of memory foam but rather less costly and higher density polyurethane foam is used here.

The biggest difference between a Tempur-Pedic mattress and all the others is that they’re specifically designed to respond to changes in both weight and temperature. This means it can be either soft or firm depending what you need. the material can actually conform to your unique body dimensions, which gives you necessary support in the right places. these mattresses are especially helpful for people with back and neck problems, as study after study has confirmed.

Something you should be aware of is that a regular mattress won’t distribute weight evenly. This is the reason that the part of the bed you lay upon starts to sag. Continuous pressure on the same spot all of the time will eventually stop the mattress from supporting. Most of the time, the hips and lower back are the worst places causing your spine to be in the wrong position. Normal mattresses commonly aggravate a prior condition such as a bad back.

Another advantage with a Tempur-Pedic mattress is that they’re nearly maintenance free. you don’t have to flip them or really do anything for them. They’ll never develop body impressions or start poking you with springs, which means they can last up to twice as long as an average mattress. in fact, the company currently offers a 20-year limited warranty on all of their mattresses. So, if you have a bad back, neck, poor circulation or just want a good mattress that will last you at least two decades, this may be the brand for you.

It’s important to remember however, that a Tempur-Pedic mattress isn’t for everyone. They’re very different from a coiled spring mattress and may take some getting used to. while the majority of people report coming to like them after a short period, some never do and have to switch back to a regular mattress. Common complaints include the mattress being too firm, having an unpleasant chemical odor, or retaining too much heat and causing the user to wake up sweaty.

Fortunately, a close look at Tempur-Pedic mattress reviews shows that these problems are fairly rare so you probably shouldn’t worry too much about them. If you’re having trouble sleeping, or are waking up in the morning with aches and pains caused by your current mattress, then it’s definitely worth trying one out to see if it can help.

Will you pre read my report for me? tell me anything thats wrong with it?

Vera Wang, the prestigious famous and talented designer, who designs clothing for many celebritys and professional athletes. she has gained attention for her elegant and original designs. Vera Ellen Wang was born on the 27th of June, 1949. she belonged to her affluent Chinese family. During her childhood she grew up on Manhattan's Upper East Side. she also attended prestigious schools like Chapin School and the School of American Ballet. After, she enrolled at Sarah Lawrence College and she donated part of her time studying abroad at the Sorbonne in Paris. But when she decided to return to the United States, she completed her degree in art history.

During her teens she was a wonderful figure skater who competed professionally and started skating when she was just 8, and she won her first regional championship at 12 years old. Vera usually started the day with practice before school and then ended her day with more practice. But eventually Wang decided give up her ice skating career for a assistant to fashion director Polly Mellen. with her new job she took as much as she could to learn about the fashion industry. she usually worked seven days a week and had little time for other things. she was totally absorbed with her job and made all the effort to make the best of it. But by the mid-1980's Vera needed to get away from the intense lifestyle so she took a leave of abcense from her Vouge editor job after working there for more than a decade. After that, she went to work for Ralph Lauren, where she was a designer for accessories.

With a less berserk lifestyle at Ralph Lauren, Wang had more time for her personal life. she had met her future husband, businessman Arthur Becker, in 1980. After the romance blossomed the couple became engaged and as Vera Wang shared with A&E Biography, she went on a search for a perfect wedding dress and found a "sameness to everything." and soon enough she realized her desire to answer that calling. she eventually gave up her search for the perfect dress and hired a dressmaker for her wedding dress. and out of that good experience the enthusiasm for a new business grew.

In 1990 Veras father thought it was about time to launch her own business and to offer financial backing. she opened her first bridal gown store in the Carlyle Hotel in New York City. Vera Wang acheived her massive success because of her service to the bride. her services went much farther than just a wedding gown. she wanted to help the bride with there extremely busy lives. so Vera Wang strives to do everything well in her life she works hard to balence business and family, as she chalenges herself everyday.

Vera Wang and Kohl’s – Brand Suicide or Masterful Marketing?

Vera Wang has little to lose and far more to win in the venture into ‘cheap chic’ branding.

The new ‘cheap chic’ fashion line from Vera Wang, called “Simply Vera” is slated to hit Kohl’s 800-some stores and its website in early September 2007. This is a major effort for Kohl’s, supported by an 8-page print ad in leading fashion publications, a Times Square billboard in association with new York’s fashion week and thirty-second television spots.

This is also a turning point for the Vera Wang brand. Pundits are lining up with doom-and-gloom predictions about Vera Wang’s descent to the masses and its subsequent loss of luxury allure. But my response to the ney-sayers is “Get over it.”

Today’s shopper is too savvy. they won’t confuse the more affordable $100 items in the ‘Simply Vera’ line at Kohl’s with the upscale ready-to-wear line at Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue and other luxury retailers.

The mistake so many of the Vera Wang-Kohl’s critics make is to assume that only middle- and lower-income shoppers are drawn to Kohl’s. But the facts speak for themselves: many high-income luxury shoppers also frequent discounters and the mass marketers looking for bargains. in Unity Marketing’s latest survey of luxury consumers, over one-fourth (26 percent) of luxury shoppers shopped in Kohl’s in 2006, which is more than shopped at Nordstrom (23 percent), the top ranked luxury retailer. (see Unity Marketing’s Luxury Report 2007, unitymarketingonline.com/cms_luxury/luxury/Luxury_Report_2007.php )

Vera Wang’s branding strategy for the future – Target the Young Affluents, the Want-It-All Generation

The Vera Wang partnership with Kohl’s aims squarely at the most promising opportunity in the luxury market today – capturing the loyalty of the young affluent market – who will become the core of the luxury market in the near future as the Baby-Boom generation starts to retire.

Taking a luxury brand and spreading it across a wider spectrum of price points is a key branding strategy to target the young affluents. in a Unity Marketing study of the 40 year old and under luxury consumers, called Generations of Luxury, we found that the younger affluents, despite their high incomes, are far more frugal in their day-to-day purchasing than the more indulgent older affluents.

The young affluents are called the ‘Want-It-All Generation because they have a ravenous appetite for the good life and spend freely for luxury goods and services, spending nearly one-third more on luxuries than the over 40 year old luxury consumer in 2006. At the same time, their luxury shopping list is far longer than the Baby Boomers’. Their high incomes have to stretch further, so the young affluents, in particular, are drawn to mass merchants and discount venues where they can search out the best-for-less.

The luxury market will become more competitive in the near future, as today’s Baby Boom generation passes into their senior years. Luxury brands that don’t make the transition to the young affluents will be left out in the cold. The Vera Wang partnership with Kohl’s is perfectly positioned to build loyalty among young affluents for the Vera Wang brand that will translate into more future sales of the upscale Vera Wang ready-to-wear line. Targeting the young affluent market is the big opportunity — and challenge — for luxury marketers worldwide.
