Who’s Getting AIDS? Why HIV Testing Is Still Important

Look back. what kind of life have you been leading? have you had a ton of fun? have you partaken in beer pong and other drinking games during college? have you ever prided yourself on the amount of tail you’ve gotten? Maybe you’ve lived exactly the opposite way. Maybe you’ve had fun.but not to extremes. Maybe you didn’t so much drink in college as you.um, studied. Maybe you’ve only had one or two long-term love affairs, between which have been barren wastelands of celibacy. either way, folks, both lifestyles deserve a round of HIV testing.

The reason is that there is no one constituency that excels in positive HIV test results. Okay, there ARE the high-risk groups, and we all know who falls into those categories, but that’s just not us. Yet the threat of catching this awful virus still looms large for anyone who chooses his or her life outside of the proverbial closet. in Liberace and Carrie’s case: the literal closet-but that’s another article all together. this one merely suggests that anyone involved in sexual shenanigans-whether one-on-one or all over the map-owe it to themselves to head to the nearest HIV testing center.

Why? who is it that contracts HIV in this day and age? New groups currently at high risk for contracting HIV/AIDS are indicated below.

Suburban & Rural People
Although America’s cities have had decades to expand their healthcare services to include persons infected with HIV, most small towns have not. this is disturbing once you realize that, according to published reports statistics show rates proportionally increasing in rural communities.

The Elderly
This is primarily true of New Yorkers. according to the State Commissioner of Health, the number of residents over the age of 50 infected with HIV is steadily rising. it is also the percentage of older New Yorkers with HIV/AIDS that seems to be rising at an alarming rate. in 2008 they represented almost 40% of all cases in New York State. That is a whopping 20% increase in five years.

Women
While it is still true that men outnumber women in U.S. rates of HIV infection, there ARE countries in this world where the infection rate of women outnumber that of men. since 1985 the U.S. rate of infection in women has nearly tripled to 27 percent. That means that one out of every four HIV-infected people in America are women.

Young People
At the beginning of the AIDS epidemic people (including young people) were scared and therefore practiced safe sex. these days, due to new drugs that-although severely debilitating-prolong life, young people seem to view HIV with less concern than previous generations. this has directly affected infection rates in the young for the worse.

One quick look at the list above and it is clear that no one is safe from the specter of HIV/AIDS. There are ways to combat this that include an end to nameless hook-ups and drug-fueled sex binges and DO INCLUDE the practice of monogamy and more importantly-safe sex. Get yourself to an STD clinic today to commence your HIV testing.

Portrait Of A Heroine – An Anti-AIDS Leader

If you could be a reporter for one day and interview any one person in Africa, who would it be and why? Ask people this question and they usually answer, Ms.Kwelagobe.The international community recognized the Botswanas Mpule Kwelagobe for her fight against AIDS in the world.unfortunately, the AIDS pandemic of 1983-2006 killed more people than Cambodian genocide (1975-1979).

Mpule was born the youngest of three children to Justice and Dibelang Kwelagobe in Gaborone, Botswanas capital, in 1979. Her name means one who comes with the rain.from 1993 to 1997, she was a sportswoman in her country.furthermore, Mpule was fifteen years old and she was crowned miss Leo Club in 1995.

In 1997 her family moved to Lobatse, Botswana where she attended hight school. Her favorites subject were mathematics and physics. However, the girl won an important contest, and in November that year the new miss Botswana-World went to miss World. The 1997 miss World was held in Seychelles, a little paradise, but Mpule Kwelagobe did not qualify for the semifinals.
She once said, Many things have happened in my life since that day. my horizons were first broadened with my experiences at miss World in the Seychelles.

MS. KWELAGOBE:AN ANTI-AIDS LEADER

The year 1999 signified a complete metamorphosis in the life of Mapule Kwelagobe. She was crowned miss Botswana-Universe in the 1st Annual Pageant help in Gaborone, a multiracial city known for its hospitality.in other words, She qualified for the miss Universe , an annual international beauty contest.miss Universe pageant was help in Trinidad & Tobago, the birthplace of the first black miss Universe.before winning miss Botswana-Universe, Mpule received a scholarship to study electronic engineering.

In the small Caribbean island-nation of Trinidad & Tobago, she was not favorite. However, under the leadership of Angelo John, designer, miss Botswana had the highest semifinal score. Her abnegation and constancy were rewarded at the miss Universe.for many judges, miss Botswana was the perfect African dream girl: slim, exotic face and natural-looking.Finally, miss Botswana was crowned the last miss Universe of the 20th

century on may 26th, 1999 in Chaguaramas, one of the most beautiful places in the Caribbean. She was crowned miss Universe 1999 by miss Universe Wendy Fitzwilliam of Trinidad & Tobago, the third black winner of the contest.

Since 1999, Mpule Kwelagobe became an anti-AIDS activist in the Third World countries. She used her title to champion HIV/AIDS prevention and education. Certainly, she loves her country and Africa.

Throughout the 20th century, Botswana, an ex British colony, was a democratic country. The African country did not have a dictator as Hissne Habre (Chad) or Charles Taylor (Liberia).Botswanas human development system was once considered among the best in the Third World. a world of freedom and peace, without wars, discrimination and poverty.

Today, Botswana has one of the worlds highest rates of AIDS. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that about one-third of the adult population has HIV/AIDS. The average life expectancy in the African country has fallen from 67 years to 47 as a result of AIDS. The number of people living with HIV and AIDS is getting worse in Botswana. About 80 persons are infected with HIV every day. There are 27 million people infected with HIV in Africa. The epidemics in Lesotho, Namibia, Botswana, South Africa and Swaziland are continuing to grow.

Mpule Kwelagobe works with organizations to promote HIV /AIDS awareness in the world. She works with the AmFar (Americans for AIDS Research), God love We Deliver and Harvard AIDS Institute. Since then she has visited many people affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa, Asia, Europe and the United States.for many times, she has had interviews with politicians such as Nelson Mandela.at that time, with support private and public, she founded the Mpule Kwelagobe Childrens village houses 400 children living with HIV and AIDS. furthermore, the first black African miss Universe established an anti-AIDS foundation.

In the 21st century, she was named UN Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). in 2001, Mpule was awarded the Jonathan Mann Health Human Rights Award. Former miss Botswana received the award for her significant contributions to world health. Jonathan would have been especially happy learn that one of the recipients of the award this year is Mpule Kwelagobe, said Nicholas Dodd, who worked wholeheartedly in the promotion of the AIDS policy at the World Health Organization (WHO).

Mpule Keneilwe Kewaloge admires Sir Seretse Khama, who was a charismatic former president of Botswana from 1966 to 1980. Sir Seretse Khama worked for a unified Botswana and gave the nation added prominence on the Third World stage. she once said, I would have loved to have interviewed Sir Seretse Khama-Botswanas just president. he was practical man with vision, who fought again discrimination, to give Botswana democratic rights.

I think that Mpule is a symbol of feminine power in the 21st century. Finally, I would like to finish my article with a message by Ms. Kwelagobe : We are all infected with this virus because we all live in a country (Botswana) that is infected. And until we win the war against AIDS no one can say I am not infected

How can we stop the spread of AIDS?

I was in class (Biology; Intro. to human disease) and someone said if we took every single person with AIDS and killed them would the virus die out? It only spread threw sexual / needle sharing (bodily fluid). I know this is wrong thing to do and i wouldn't be for it and it's a shame people are dying / suffering from this virus. but do u think this would actually work?

Would it work? possibly….Hitler would have loved the guy who said that……

To me, a more logical approach would be REAL sex education. Parents here are under the assumption that if we tell kids more about sex, they are more likely to have it. WRONG. the fact is, families who are open about the physical dangers (and emotional turmoil) attached with "underage" sex have children who wait longer to lose thier virginities. I have worked in STD clinics and it is SO sad to hear the things these teens don't understand. in Africa (I believe Uganda is the country making some of the biggest strides) in safer sex classes, but being very real about the fact that it is merely SAFER sex, not safe. Its good to teach abstinence as the best form, but in this day and age, children are having sex. We need to let them know what they are getting themselves into, preferably before it starts. in Uganda, not only have HIV rates dived, but also the number of people practicing pre marital sex or extramarital affairs…..Monogamy has a new status in their society. maybe we could look at what they have done and not be afraid to try a more direct approach.

AIDS is not the problem. the problem is HIV….HIV stand for human immunodeficiency virus……That's the virus that can cause the syndrome AIDS AIDS stands for accquired immunodeficiency syndrome.

People can have HIV and not have AIDS….please be clear on the difference.

You would have to kill every person and/or living thing with HIV. the likelihood of being able to do that is almost zero.

IN theory, yes, that would work. once you kill off the virus, it cannot produce itself. however, one has to ask…where did it come from in the first place…..?

Stop having sex with monkeys!

If people stopped having sexual intercourse with people that have or carry AIDS it would seriously minimize the spread. Rarely is it spread through blood transfusions anymore.

Yup Clive is correct, abstinence is the only way to stop it from being sexually transmitted, as for needles, and drug use, that's a little tougher. so propper sterilization and sanitation would be necessary.
As for killing everyone… that's not feesable, as the virus can lie dormant in a person for a long, long time before popping up, so there may be millions of people who test negative right now, but in five or ten years they may not.

No it won't. Because u r killing the hosts. now for starters we don't know the actual number of hosts. second the virus is primarly bred in the monkeys and then it has spread to other animals. only way is to make the vaccine public, since FDA already has it.

Condoms!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It probabaly would. if no one else had it then itd be gone.

no that won't solve the problem because then we wud hv very few ppl left on this planet. the root cause was due to some crazy ppl (cant use bad words here anyway) having s.x with monkeys and apes and other animals in the forest.

The HIV virus which causes AIDS replicates, infecting the healthy cells of the affected person and there are many ways you can control it and lead a normal life.
The pharmaceutical (allopathic) medicines used for AIDS try to slow down the speed at which the HIV virus multiplies and are called antiretroviral drugs.Natural treatment for AIDS try to strengthen the immune system of the affected person. Herbal medicines are often used in combination with alternative treatment methods like massage, acupuncture and meditation. More details and remedy at pnuaids.com/

US Government created AIDS to kill black people?

this is one of the many crazy theroies brought on by Jerimah Wright, and I saw a poll that says something like 30% of people agree the goverment created it. Here's the problem with this theory, AIDS kills millions of whites and people of other races every year as well as blacks. and why has Bush given over 40 billion dollars of goverment funding to AIDS relief in Africa? more than any other President in our history. if this were true then why did the US give AIDS to non-black countries like Japan or Europe. Hasn't it been proven by science AIDS started with monkeys and spread to humans?

You only just heard this rant from Wright. He's a moron!
No it hasen't been proven it began with monkeys, there's many theories as to how it began and to be honest, i haven't researched it, so i don't know facts.
Wright is an ignoramous, shouldn't be listened too, watching his sermons on t.v scare me, it's like a freaking cult of some kind.
I agree also that what he said about 9/11 was uncalled for and disgusting! Beyond disgusting actually.

if america wanted to kill black people they would have just done it.

did it to the native american indians.

just ignorance on his part. he is a racist and thinks everyone is out to get him. i supprt obama and im really happy he is no longer associated with wright.

but i must add…that bush also dipped into the african aids fund for his war. so dont make him sound super great.

The rumor is ridiculous but may have some basis in fact. No one deliberately caused the virus to spread from monkeys to humans. However there were well intentioned people using to monkeys to create vaccines and this may have been the original cause of the transfer between species.

well yr question isnt very clear but i will try 2 answer it. first u asked if aids started with monkies. yes that IS true. and then u asked something about the goveremnt using aids 2 kill black. right now, that isnt true. the goverment has NOT made aids 2 kill blacks. but if u r talking way back in the olden days, still probably not.

The US government did create and release AIDS – it was first injected into blacks and gay men. however, it was not created to kill black people specifically.

The US has a long history of testing their new weapons on the unassuming american public.

Well, people believe in god, and there is no proof of that creature existing, so you can imagine that some people will believe anything.

This kind of conspiracy theory borders on insanity.
The bigger the lie, the more people tend to believe.

This is the most stupid conspiracy theory to the point I've ever heared to the point that 9/11=crappy joke and this one=insanity.

used to be government created aids to kill homosexuals, now its blacks. next will probably be drug users.

Even the "Tuskegee Syphilis Study," involved studying not infecting. his theories are garbage.

it wasn't created to kill black people. that's ridiculous, if they wanted to kill black people that bad, why waste white people in the cause?

You are right. This theory is totally false. so blame the monkeys.

anyone who believes this is a moron an doesnt deserve to live in the united states.

America did not create AIDS to kill black people…. Just people who have unprotected sex.

That was a horrible thing for him to say.

parker must be right — she writes in instant message talk. an expert if there ever was one.

dude, this is just wack.

Oh don't be stupid

I dont think they really know where AIDS came from. there is no conclusive evidence. However, both seem silly to me. How would science prove AIDS came from monkeys when we evolved from monkies?

I need stats on HIV?AIDS with African American youths in Lake County, ILL.?

I need information on the stats of African American youth who have either HIV/AIDS and programs available for youth in Lake County, IL to address issues concerning HIV/AIDS. I am writing a paper for my Masters in Social Work at Loyola.
