Tub Chairs Are Cool Again

To start with there are many conflicting opinions about what exactly qualifies a chair to be called a tub chair. most people in the know though agree that any chair that has a single piece curved back that makes up both the arms and the back of a chair can be called a tub chair. To many it is the essence of simple and understated modern furniture as it is so different from the overly fussy and sometimes uselessly intricate pieces of furniture that were favoured until just a few decades back. This is true as these days you are more likely to see a it in a modern upmarket apartment or in a trendy club as their clean and minimalist lines go so well with modern interiors.

This has led many people to believe that the it is in fact a modern piece of furniture that was invented perhaps at the earliest in the sixties when a lot of other modern space age looking styles of furniture were designed by furniture designers who were inspired by the moon missions and the jet age. This is in fact untrue and a lot of the evidence available to historians today seems to point to one man as the father of the modern tub chair as we know it today. This man is Josef Hoffman, an architect and a designer who taught at the Vienna school of arts and crafts. his chair was then known as a Hoffman chair and it truly caught on a few decades later at the turn of the twentieth century when one of the most spectacular archaeological finds ever was made in Egypt by Howard Carter.

The unearthing of the tomb of King Tutankhamen led to many startling discoveries and fired the imagination of people the world over. One of these discoveries was that the Egyptian throne chairs were a kind of tub chair or Hoffman chair albeit a bit more flat. the back and arms were indeed a single piece in the style of the tub chairs but they were flat. This fired up a huge amount of interest in Hoffman’s design and people around the world stated to buy these chairs as the frenzy for all things related in any way to Egypt hit its peak.

Today the tub chair is once again seeing a period of renaissance as its clean and uncluttered lines seem to fit into our modern world just as well as it fit into ancient Egypt.

Ergonomic Benefits of Mesh Office Chairs

The word ergonomic originated from the Greek words ergos meaning work, and nomos, meaning natural laws of. In essence ergonomics is the study of how we can manipulate our work environment to better suit our bodies while we work. Humans were not designed to sit for 8 plus hours a day Knowing this ergonomists have spent decades studying how to better support the body during this unnatural process of seated task work.

There are many aspects involved in creating a functional, ergonomic work environment. there are so many we cannot cover all of them in one article so we’ll focus on the the most important piece of ergonomic furniture in your office. YOUR CHAIR. there is only one piece of ergonomic furniture you will always be in contact with and that is your ergonomic chair. whenever your sitting at your desk your body is in constant contact with whatever form of office seating you’ve chosen to use. It’s important that the seat and back surfaces are constructed with materials that reduce pressure points and follows the contours of the body. Continuous Support is the foundation of every ergonomic office chair.

For years manufacturers focused on using multiple layers of foam with different densities. In 1994 Herman Miller introduced the Aeron Chair using mesh for both the seat and the back. The use of mesh was genius and sparked a revolution in the design and manufacture of office seating. The introduction of mesh to the seat and back yields perfection in continuous support. The mesh follows every curve of the body and cradles the user. The lumbar area of the back is of particular advantage because each users body is of different proportions. The mesh gives in the scapular areas and remains tight in the lumbar region which improves posture immensely. this can be achieved with a foam chair but the chair would not be perfect for every user. a chair with mesh on the seat or back can be used by a wider range of body types and can provide continuous support to all of them

Ergonomic mesh chairs are not only look cool but as you can see they have functional purpose as well. a mesh office chairs ability to provide ergonomically correct support to the users is unsurpassed by any other material. there are now many manufacturers providing chairs with mesh used to upholster the seating surfaces. Chairs with mesh seats are generally more expensive because they’re more complex and expensive to manufacture. Many office chairs have mesh backs only and a traditional foam seat. this makes for a more affordable ergonomic mesh chair. either option is generally better than a traditional office chair with foam cushions because of the properties of mesh upholstery.

Are all Eames rocking chairs so short? They seem to be made for children. Do you they make adult size chairs?

Does anyone know of a website to buy them. The tallest ones i can find are 26 inches tall. That is way short! i want a normal size one. It doesnt matter if it is a reproduction to me, anything.

What are some good, modern color schemes for a chair/stool made of wood?

I'm thinking of designing a modern chair/stool.
This chair is just made of wood, but I need two colors which go together, well, and make it look modern.

For example: Satin red seat, with everything else white.

Black wood and silver or grey material for the cushion. Find a subtle print maybe.

Staining Wood – Chairs

Staining wood can be very rewarding, it can totally change the way the object looks. Basically you can stain anything in your home that’s made of wood. but of course some would be a lot easier to stain than others items would be.

For example; if you want a stain something that has previously been stained that might be somewhat easier than staining a previously painted piece of wood.

Lets say you have two different chairs one was painted, and the other stained. Now mind you of course that if you have a ton or varnish on the chair he will have almost the same amount of work as you would have on a painted chair. A painted chair requires multiple coats of paint stripper applied. do not try to take the paint off with one stripping session. Let the paint stripper do the work for you and take off one layer at a time easily. When you apply the paint stripper onto the wood let it sit for a couple minutes until it bubbles or you can see it lift. at this point you can either take a specialty paint stripping blade which looks something like a triangle with a stick attached to it, and scrape off all the new stuff. This scraping should be relatively easy because you are not scraping off any Un-soften paint just the stuff that got softened by the stripper. Then paint it again with the stripper and repeat the process. I say again that the stripper do the work!

Once you have finally stripped all the paint off the chair now you can give it a sanding. while you are sanding examine the wood for misses of left on paint. here you have two choices either put more stripper on which I suggest or or sand out the leftover paint.

Now that your chair is ready for staining you will need with you a soft cloth to stain with and some more fresh soft cloths to wipe with. I generally use a good quality rubber glove so my hands don’t look awful when I finish staining. but don’t wear such a hard glove that you can’t move your hands in it. Dip at part of the rag into the container of stain being careful not to get the rag to wet with stain. and start wiping on staying the same way you do shoe polish don’t forget this is not paint this is stain so you’re not putting on layers thick of material you’re just staining the wood not painting it.

Now that your chair has been stained you can choose a clear finish to put on top of the wood you can choose anywhere from a satin finish to a high gloss finish. if you want to do a nice finish then do multiple coats of clear on it don’t try to do just one. five thin coats look a lot better than two thick ones.
