Beat COPD With Yoga

Great, you just got home from seeing the doctor for your annual visit. She said you’ve got COPD. What the heck is that? it means Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. Huh?

Chronic- a medical condition that is long lasting, recurring

Obstructive- an obstruction or blockage of airflow from inflamed tissues

Pulmonary- lungs, air passages

Disease- an abnormal condition affecting the body, not at ease, dis-ease

The most common cause of COPD is the result of smoking. all my patients who are smokers ask me to tell the kids not to start. Look at me now. How cool do I look with tubes in my nose hauling around this stupid tank? Advanced COPD can even cause a bluish color to the skin and lips.

Long term oxygen therapy or even a lung transplant could be in your future. it is the fourth leading cause of death in the US. Fourth. that works out to about 131,000 people a year; nearly 360 people dying a day. if you have COPD, now is the time to make the choice to fight back, stop smoking, and regain some of the functions needed for the activities of daily living (ADL).

1.) Your body is full of muscles. When you exercise your muscles they get stronger. You even have muscles that make you breathe. the diaphragm, which is under your lungs and the intercostal muscles between your ribs is your breathing muscle. if you exercise your breathing muscles you will breathe better. the more able you are to breathe the more active you become and get more of your independence back in the process.

2.) There are four types of exercises in pulmonary rehabilitation. Stretching exercises promote muscle flexibility. Aerobic exercises like walking or biking increases your body’s use of oxygen. Specific breathing exercises, learning new and different ways to breathe, build up the breathing muscles help to take in more oxygen with every breath. Diaphragmatic breathing works specifically to strengthen your diaphragm. these breathing exercises also promote calm during episodes of breathing distress which helps people with COPD react more effectively.

3.) I can’t think of anything more stressful than not being able to breathe. Accept possibly my ex-husband. Taking numerous deep breaths during exercise of any kind has a very soothing effect on the mind and body. Your brain has the ability to control your breathing rate based on the amount of carbon dioxide in the blood, not oxygen. When we are nervous or stressed we take small shallow breaths which causes too much carbon dioxide to come out of the blood which then causes an imbalance of gases. Taking deep breaths, filling your lungs to capacity and slowly exhaling promotes the gaseous balance in the blood.

4.) With less stress you will experience another by-product of exercise, better mood. doing simple yoga poses has shown increases in a brain chemical called GABA, gamma-amino butyric acid which regulates nerve activity to reduce anxiety and improve your mood.

5.) Finally, we all could use more energy. doing simple, un-pretzel like yoga poses will give you more of it. the stretching and breathing techniques done during yoga accomplish this. Breathing, sitting and standing are things you already do and now you can do them with a heightened awareness. In as little as four weeks you can notice significant improvement in flexibility, endurance and vitality.

Few would argue that yoga is an excellent addition to your COPD program and with careful planning, you can benefit from an improvement in your overall perception of health. since COPD makes breathing difficult, yoga can give you simple techniques to increase your breathing power and enjoy your life.

Respiratory Therapy Training

Respiratory therapy training is often found in medical schools; however, an education in respiratory therapy can come from vocational, technical, and trade schools, as well.

Respiratory therapists (respiratory therapy technicians) who have proper medical training can diagnose and administer respiratory care to patients with breathing and cardiopulmonary conditions. Respiratory therapy schools will teach the future respiratory therapist (RT) to abide by definitive care procedures and work directly under the supervision of a physician.

Respiratory therapy courses include mathematics, chemistry, physics, human anatomy, human physiology, pharmacology, and microbiology. Therapeutic and diagnostic procedures, implementation of various tests, and equipment will also be part of the RT curriculum. Students taking respiratory therapy training will study patient assessment, patient care, cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation, CPR and first aid techniques, clinical guidelines, and medical record maintenance.

Respiratory therapy training imparts skills for working with pressurized gases, and students learn about safety precautions that must be taken with these hazardous materials. Students will also study maintenance of equipment, as well as the risks infectious diseases and methods to control them.

Qualified respiratory therapy technicians often find employment in medical and surgical hospitals. Entry into the field generally requires an Associate of Science (AS) degree from an accredited school. most states require those who have completed respiratory therapy training to obtain professional certification prior to employment.

Entry-level respiratory therapists can anticipate an annual income around $30,000; experienced respiratory therapy technicians who have gained advance respiratory therapy training and hold a higher degree can earn upwards of $60,000 annually.

Environmental Diseases: Is Your Home Making You Sick?

Mold is almost everywhere. while most people know that exposure to pollution and toxic chemicals can lead to illness, there are toxins inside of most homes that can make people sick as well. Scientific evidence in forensic toxicology has shown that certain molds within the home can lead to or exasperate diseases.

Mold itself is very common, growing anywhere that there is moisture. certain kinds of mold produce toxins, called mycotoxins, which can be dangerous for people. this toxic mold is hard for an individual to distinguish from benign varieties, so any mold should be treated as potentially toxic.

Symptoms of Toxic Mold Exposure

Symptoms of toxic mold exposure vary from person to person. Some signs of exposure are relatively mild, such as sneezing or a runny nose. these can become more serious, especially as the amount of time exposed to mold increases. Nose bleeds, breathing disorders and chronic sinus infections are all more advanced symptoms. In some cases, the exposure results in extreme problems, such as memory loss, blindness or brain damage. the most extreme cases can even result in cancer or death.

Certain people will be more at risk of developing problems than others. People who have a compromised immune system, such as those with HIV or AIDS, or with a breathing disorder, such as asthma, will be more susceptible. People with underlying medical conditions need to particularly vigilante to the presence of toxic mold in their homes.

Fixing the Problem

Thankfully, there are ways to remove toxic mold. Solid surfaces, such as walls and floors, can be cleaned thoroughly with bleach to kill the mold. Softer surfaces, such as clothing or ceiling tiles, will need to be thrown away and replaced.

Because many of the symptoms of exposure are similar to many other diseases, getting the proper diagnosis is key to rectifying the problem. Internal medicine experts, especially those who deal with toxins and environmental diseases, will be able to help diagnosis and solve the problem.

Controversy Among Experts

Mold exposure is a controversial topic, and not all scientists believe that mold is a dominate cause of disease. Researchers at Harvard have recently put together work claiming that there is no scientific evidence that mold causes the worst symptoms, such as cancer. They do however cite that mold may be present in up to 70% of homes in the United States, but statistics on how many of those homes have harmful types of mold are not readily available.

Certain factors make mold more prolific. Molds tend to expand during summer months when the heat and humidity enhance their breeding conditions. Molds found outside can often be more dangerous than those found inside. Summer camps tend to have high levels of mold. certain workplaces are also potential sources of mold exposure and contamination.

HIV and Aids – The Coming Epidemic in the United States

HIV and AIDS are diseases spread by sexual contact. they came to the forefront of the national scene with many prominent actors, sports figures, playwrights, and members of the arts community being infected. Formerrly they were death sentences but now adequate treatments exist, consisting of highly active antiretroviral therapy, or HAART. although available, this treatment costs about 20k per year.

Several trends indicate that this disease is increasing in staggering numbers and within the next 20 years, will reach truly epidemic proportions, said Dr. Marcus a. Conant, clinical adjunct professor at the University of California at San Francisco, speaking at the 2009 American Academy of Dermatology in San Francisco March 7th. Currently, 58,000 individuals become infected with HIV each year, the same number as the total number of American soldiers who died in all the years of the Vietnam conflict.

But the numbers are increasing and are bound to increase more. For example 20% of black males in new York between the Ages of 40 and 49 are infected. and only a small number know they are infected.

Why is this number increasing? first and foremost, sexual behavior patterns. In years gone by, individuals were monogamous. now, many individuals have more sexual partners, and often have more than one within a short period of time.

Second, circumcision prevents the spread of aids. Less individuals are circumcised.

Third, drug usage affects sexual behavior. Years gone by, cocaine and heroin were the drugs of choice in the sexually active communities. now, methamphetamine is much more in vogue. It’s a stimulant, and under its influence, young adults have several sexual encounters. Couple that with Viagra, and Viagra is most commonly used in young adult males, and you have a critical situation, says Conant.

Fourth, immigration from affected nations is increasing to the United States and people are not screened.

Which states and cities will be involved? the Southern United States -California, Texas, Louisiana, Florida, Missouri (the meth capital of the United States) and large cities like Chicago and new York.

What can be done to avoid this disaster? Public education, use of condoms, and adopting a different attitude. Permissiveness is causing this to spread. Preachers can take a more active role.

In Africa, spread of this disease has largely been by the trans- Africa highway. Infected truck drivers transmitted the disease to bar workers and the disease was then spread to others in the community. we should learn from this experience. Soon the disease will spread throughout the southern United States for similar reasons, says Conant

HIV Cure: Gene Therapy Results Still Preliminary

HIV experts are optimistic about a recent study in which researchers were able to reconfigure blood cells, making them resistant to HIV. this trial was done on six HIV infected patients successfully treated with antiretroviral therapy (ART). but experts are not sure yet if this will actually be a cure to the deadly disease, though they all agree it is a step in the right direction. this study was done after a man in Berlin received a stem cell transplant and four years later is cured from HIV.

The HIV gene therapy results were announced in March 2011 during a medical conference in Boston, Massachusetts. this is a positive sign that there might be a cure found in the near future and will generate excitement in researchers to keep looking. this new approach will not completely eliminate HIV from the body, but it will make the virus controllable, most likely without the need of medication. It is called a functional cure.

An autologous cell transplant was performed in the study, where a human gene was permanently deleted and the altered cells were infused back into the patient. Previous gene therapies were to muffle the activity of a gene or add a new gene, both approaches where unsuccessful. Specifically, six men with HIV had some blood filtered and some T-Cells removed from that blood. a gene-snipping compound called ‘zinc finger nuclease’ was added to the T-cells. The modified cells were then mixed with growth factors before infusing them back into the patient’s blood stream. Half of the men received about five billion modified cells and the other half received about 205 billion modified cells. after a year, these modified cells are still thriving and multiplying.

HIV attacks a person’s T-cells, which are special immune system cells, through a protein receptor called CD4 and a coreceptor called CCR5. There are some people that lack the CCR5 gene and are naturally immune to HIV. when a person lacking the CCR5 gene donated bone marrow to a person with leukemia, who also happened to be HIV positive, the HIV infection was cured. this sparked the study. The patients had about two days worth of flu-like symptoms, which was the only reported side effect during the study. not only is this a huge step in finding a cure for HIV and AIDS, but it is a huge revelation in the field of genetics. It is the first time in the history that doctors succeed to achieve a sabotage of the natural history of HIV infection.

Over the Counter Hearing Aids Can Improve Your Life

As the wife of a man who has hearing problems, I understand how frustrating it is to have to repeat everything at least twice and usually more frequently than that. So I’m directing this article to the wives of men with hearing problems, but if you are a man whose wife is the one who can’t hear, read on.

Men in particular often have a hard time admitting that they need hearing aids. They tend to withdraw in social situations because there’s usually so much going on that they can’t discern any one conversation. over time they tend to settle in to their quiet world and of course this is not a healthy situation.

Sound Ampifiers

If your spouse is resistant to wearing hearing aids, you might want to help him or her get used to the idea by suggesting sound amplifiers. These are quite inexpensive, and it will get him used to using an appliance to hear better. Often when a person realizes what they are missing they are more interested in improving the situation.

Another item that is super helpful is wireless headphones for the television. when a person can’t hear well, the volume of the TV starts to rise to the point that it’s much too loud for anyone else sitting in the room. With headphones they can listen to the TV and you can either enjoy a lower volume or have it muted so you have peace and quiet. a bonus is that your spouse will discover that he or she can hear a lot more clearly and have a better understanding of what’s going on in the movie or TV show.

Hearing Aids from Online Stores

These items will help both of you, but the issue still remains that your spouse needs either one or two hearing aids. Once he’s learned how much he has been missing and how much better it is to be able to hear everything, he should be much more amenable to trying them. since hearing aids can be a very large investment, one way to try them out is to buy over the counter hearing aids.

These are, for the most part, far less expensive. They are also not customized for the exact hearing loss that’s being experienced, but they can help to a certain degree. Even if your husband (or wife) only wears them around the house, he’ll be able to hear you talk and as a result you’ll most likely get along better.

Once the hurdle of actually using a hearing aid is jumped, if you can afford it now is the time to get a custom fitted hearing aid for the specific type of loss your spouse suffers. Oftentimes you can get a free hearing test to learn where the problem lies. Then shop around to find the type of appliance you want and compare costs. You can also find top quality hearing aids online, and once you know exactly what is needed you may be able to save money buy purchasing on the Internet.

Can some give me a list of hiv/aids treatments will it help me stay a live ?

and will keep me form giving it to my boy friend and ware can i get test it and what kind of treatments do my two week old baby tack for it

see a doctor we cant give you this info

if you have sex use condoms and dental dams both of you

go to your local health department and get tested all of you

I'm sorry, but this question just sounds fishy. If you have a two week old baby, and sought any type of medical treatment while pregnant, they would have not only given you this information, but started you on medications.

If for some reason this isn't the case, you need to find a new doctor ASAP and start treatment. The drugs they give people with HIV does reduce the chance of passing it on to a partner as it reduces the viral load in the blood. your child should have been on drugs since the day she/he was born, and there are generally special precautions they take during birth to reduce the risk of transmission.

First off
Go to the doctors.

Facts About Peppers

How much fact do you know about peppers? Peppers, both sweet and hot, originated in Central and South America. according to U.S. Department of Agriculture records, commercial bell peppers were first produced in the southern United States in 1925.

You can flexibly use peppers in almost any food combinations, be it barbecue, baking, steaming, stir-frying with any vegetables, nuts, seeds or legumes. You can even eat them raw as snacks or in salads. It’s no wonder they become the favorites of the vegetarians and vegans.

Peppers come from the colorful Capsicum family which splits into two main categories – sweet bell peppers and the spicy chilies, such as jalapenos. The difference arises from the presence of capsaicin in chilies but not in sweet bell peppers.

Sweet bell peppers are also known as capsicums, sweet peppers or green / red peppers. You can’t differentiate the sweet bell peppers varieties when they’re still young because they all look green. as they ripen, they’ll change color. Depending on the stage of ripeness and their variety, their colors range from orange, yellow, red, purple, brown, black, ivory or green, and so do their sweetness.

But green bell peppers remain green throughout the ripening process. thus, you may find it challenging to differentiate the other bell peppers from the green variety before they ripen.

Facts about Peppers – Health Benefits of Chili Peppers

All peppers provide rich amount of vitamin C. But chili peppers contain an additional substance, called capsaicin which provides several health benefits such as:

- Effective treatment and natural pain relief for inflammation such as arthritis, psoriasis, diabetic neuropathy.

- Reduce risk of heart attack and stroke as it helps to reduce cholesterol levels and formation of blood clots.

- Clear blocked nose and congested lungs.

- Prevent stomach ulcers by killing bacteria in the stomach and stimulate more protective stomach juices, etc.

This red chili comes in different sizes, shapes and degrees of hotness or spiciness. The more mature the pepper, the hotter it will be. a sweet bell pepper measures 0 SHU while a habaneros or scotch bonnet, one of the hottest known chili peppers, records at around 300,000 SHU. not hot enough? then try naga jolokia, the hottest chili in the world which holds 1.04 million SHU.

More Facts about Peppers – Choosing Peppers

Peppers are not seasonal fruits, meaning you can find them in supermarkets any day during the year. choose well-shaped, firm and glossy peppers which feel heavy for their size. look out for unhealthy peppers with soft or wrinkled areas, cracks, slashes or black spots. Except for jalapeno which you’ll see some tiny cracks at the end of their stems, fresh chili peppers should not have any cracks at all.

It’s best to wrap the peppers in paper bags or paper towels and store in the refrigerator to keep their freshness – up to 5 days for bell peppers and up to 3 weeks for chili peppers. Remember to wash the peppers before cooking so as to remove the wax on their surfaces.

Why do people work/volunteer for christian aid?

Some do it because it's the "right" thing to do, some do it so soothe their conscience, but generally I think people see the need for a better world and attempts to do something about it.

Then, those living in close relationship with God often try to express the absolute joy, peace, love and fulfillment they find @ God by serving others.

Why did you ask? :)

Because they want to do something to help those less fortunate than themselves.Christ taught that to love one's neighbour as one's self ,is the next best thing to loving God.

Because their faith and belief in Christ is such that they want to ease the suffering in this world as best they can. this applies not only to Christian Aid but Mercy Ships with medical aid Tear Fund and many others. All have one thing in common which is the aid is given according to need not according to religious faith. So people of any faith or none are assisted not blindly but often assisted to be able to assist themselves. it is hoped that this is a means of some coming to faith but no one turns the screw.
All charities in difficult political situations in the midst of corruption have to face threats to life and limb and make very hard decisions

I've never done so, but I would imagine it is because their christian beliefs guide them to assist and help those that are in need. If love is the basis of a dogma, then giving aid would be a manifestation of that love. of course, it helps to have the organization and financing that many of these groups have.

Do humidifiers help copd patients breathe at night?

It does but only to a little extent.

In addition to quitting smoking, medications to help breathing such as bronchodilators, anticholinergic drugs, or corticosteroids are generally prescribed. In some cases, where COPD is severe, supplementary oxygen may be beneficial.

Oxygen is provided from an oxygen cylinder or concentrator and administered through oxygen mask or nasal tubing. Lastly, some cases of COPD can benefit from surgery where some of the damaged tissue is removed, allowing the healthy tissue to work better.

One of the common symptoms of COPD is the build up of excessive chest mucus and for this there are a number of homeopathic remedies that can help. Kali mur is one such ingredient and it is well known for its beneficial affects of the respiratory system and its ability to ease wet coughs.

Similarly, Kali sulph is excellent at naturally treating phlegm coughs and sinus congestions, as well as reducing inflammation of the mucous membranes. Kali bich also works on soothing irritated mucous membranes, especially in the lungs, and helps loosen thick chest mucus.

You may read on all such treatments including remedies in detail over here healthherbsandnutrition.com/r…
