Basic Body Piercing Equipment Needs

This is a brief guide to the supplies that you will need to preform proper, and sterile piercing.

Autoclave: by far one of the most important items in piercing. The autoclave provides a way for the needles and clamps to be sterilized. Autoclaves are a device that exposes items to steam at high pressure in order to decontaminate the materials and render them sterile. all of the items will need to be wrapped individually and un-wrapped in front of the client.

Needles: A piercing needle is a hollow needle, specifically designed to cut a round, or oval hole through the skin. this provides a subsequent passage for the jewelry.

Slotted navel clamp: The clamp provides a way of stretching the skin, allowing the piercer easier access to the area to be pierced.

Forceps: this instrument is used for grasping, and holding the skin out from the body to allow ease of piercing.

H2Ocean: Is a cleaning solution, used in the sterilization of the surrounding area of the piercing, it is also used in the after-care of the new piercing.

Ring closing pliers: these are used on captive rings, it can be difficult to close the rings on the tiny ball. this item will aid in your piercing. you can find them in large, medium, and small sizes.

Ring opener: Much like the closing of captive rings, it can be difficult to open them the first time they are removed from the sterile pouch. these will aid in opening the captives.

Receiving cork: The cork will help prevent cross-contamination from your client, to you. Placing the cork on the opposite side of the piercing, it will receive the tip of the needle allowing it to be safely handled by the piercer.

Septum forceps: these are forceps specifically designed to aid in nose piercing. it guides the needle away from the skin that is not to be pierced.

H2Ocean Mouthwash: this item is to be used prior to oral piercing, and throughout the healing process.

Jewelry: of course, this is one of the most important items on a piercers list. it is important to stock a variety of jewelry for your clients to choose from. Chances are, if their experience has been a good one, they will return to get more jewelry and piercing from you at a later date.

Tattoo Machines – A Brief History of the Tattoo Machine

Whether you’re into tattoos, gadgets, history or all three, modern tattoo machines have had an interesting evolution which begins way back in the 1800′s at the hands of one of the greatest inventors of all time: Thomas Edison – the man that filed over 1000 patents including for the light bulb and the phonograph.

In 1876 Edison invented the ‘stencil pen’ – a device which punched holes in a variety of shapes and designs onto a piece of paper placed over an object. The holes created would then be filled with colour, creating a stencil effect on the item’s surface.

Intrigued by the stencil pen, Samuel O’Reilly, a tattoo artist from NYC, took the idea one step further and in 1891 modified Edison’s invention by adding a tube and needle system so that the pen could push ink into the skin using rotary technology. However, although most people credit O’Reilly with being the inventor of the modern tattoo machine, the patent is actually owned by Charlie Wagner, an apprentice of O’Reilly, who further modified the machine to include an on/off switch amongst other things. he filed the patent for that machine in 1904.

But back in 1891, things were progressing quickly in the world of tattoo and just 20 days after O’Reilly invented his machine, a patent was filed by Thomas Reilly of London, England, who used a modified door bell in a brass box to create a whole new breed of iron: the electromagnetic coil machine.

As in any industry and as with any technology there are people out there today pushing the boundaries both creatively and with the machines they create, and as every tattoo artist modifies their machine to their own personal specifications it would be true to say that no two tattoo machines are alike.

If this brief history of the tattoo machine has whetted your appetite and you’re feeling the need for a new iron coming on, check out the huge range on the web. you don’t have to spend a fortune – there’s loads of competitively priced suppliers out there – and you might even find your dream machine

I need help on tattoo guns? Not for me.?

My boyfriend is apprenticing and I wanted to get him some tattoo machines for our anniversary but I have no idea what Im looking at. I found a Danny Fowler “Flatliner” Tattoo Machine with digital power supply and cords with a custom shader machine with needles and ink. plus a diamond tip grip. its 250$$ Is that a good deal?? I think it is but Im not sure. Please dont bash me for not knowing, Im not the one using them. =>

yeah, thats i pretty good deal. Usually you only get the machine- part for that much.

Thats not a terriably price but you can find them cheaper but most tattoo artist prefer to make there own guns or atleast piece them together for there own added touch or just so they have exactly what they want

your best bet is to talk to the guy teaching him. im sure he will be able to help and get you a good deal

Like McConnor said, talk to the guy he's apprenticing under. most tattoo artists don't buy already-made machines, they usually find a local artist who builds machines and have them custom-made. If you ask around I'm sure you'll find there is an artist in your area that makes machines which would be a much higher quality for the price. try to stay away from buying mass-produced machines.

Tattoo machine question?

if i have a not very good machine but swap the coils out with better ones will that make it alot better?
the frame spring and armature bar are fine but will new coils help?

what wrap are your coils now? is it a liner, or a shader? what kind of frame is it?

When you are first getting into being a tattoo artist on a personal and hobby-related level, purchasing the right equipment might seem daunting. a tattoo starter kit is the best way to get all the tattoo equipment you need without spending too much money. a good tattoo starter kit should include a tattoo machine, needles, tubs and tattoo ink. make sure your tattoo machine comes with the right power supply as well.

In addition to the basics, when you look into purchasing tattoo starter kits, see what kinds of extra equipment are included. many companies will include the smaller necessary items like gloves and rubber bands.
