Layering Fragrances: Make Your Own Signature Scent

Many women have had the experience of getting ready for work in the morning, or for some event in the evening, and looking at her collection of perfumes and just not knowing what to wear. but did you know you can combine your fragrances and make your own unique signature scent? Combine a Citrus and a Green fragrance, or a Floral and Oriental. there are many ways to combine perfumes to make a unique fragrance, but there is an art to this. Combining the wrong fragrances can end with something that will have people asking what perfume you’re wearing, and not in a good way.

The term layering fragrances can mean just wearing the same fragrance in different forms, such as body wash, perfume and shower gel. but you can also layer fragrances by combining different perfumes and make a signature scent. The best way to start is by adding fragrances very gradually. A popular fragrance combination is a Floral perfume and an Oriental perfume, commonly dubbed Floriental. I tend to like this combination as it is a perfect mixture of sweet and sensual. start with the more delicate fragrance, and spray a little on your wrist. Then, add a small spritz of the more intense fragrance, and rub your wrists together. A good example of a combination is something like Euphoria by Calvin Klein, which is very light and gentle. Spray that first, then add a tiny bit of whatever Oriental fragrance you choose. something like Opium by YSL would be a good choice. Feel free to be creative. most perfumes in the Oriental and Floral families work well together as a combination.

Try combining a Green fragrance with an Oceanic fragrance. They are both clean and fresh and inspired by the outdoors, and compliment each other very nicely. Some good combinations are Chanel No. 19 with cool Water by Davidoff, or Sung by Alfred Sung mixed with Giorgio Beverly Hills Ocean Dream.

If you want to be daring, try matching a Woody (Chypre) or Spicy fragrance with a Floral one. Spicy and Woody fragrances go together well, since they are both warm, musky and comforting. but adding a Floral fragrance to either of them will make a truly unique signature scent. try something like Ralph Lauren Romance with Lancome’s Tresor, or Chanel No. 5 with Chanel Coco. Chypre and Spicy fragrances can be overpowering if you spray too much, so use be careful to use it very modestly.

Remember, there are no rules in layering fragrances, so feel free to let go and be creative. use your judgment and spray lightly. It is always better to smell of no perfume than bad perfume.

Perfumes – How to Choose the Best One For Yourself

With the market being profuse by way of a wide array of perfumes, it is not surprising that people tend to get confused while zeroing on the right one. Apart from price and brand names, there are many other points that are to be considered while buying one. here are a few categories which I use personally:

French types: Most of the perfumes from France have a sort of trademark character to them. the fragrances are soft, floral, and tend to favor the powdery. these stand for sophistication, feminity, and charm. French scents tend to be more mature and are great for women in the business world or females with classic tastes and sensibilities. E.g. Chanel, Nina Ricci, Yves St. Laurent.

American types: these ones tend to favor orange and citrus notes, or have exuberant florals. Most women can wear these fragrances as they tend to compliment most skin chemistries. e.g. ‘Beautiful’ by Estee Lauder, Romance by Ralph Lauren, Eternity and Obsession by Calvin Klein.

Fresh scented types: these ones are designed to smell like soap or clean air. the best example in this range is Grace by Philosophy etc. Calvin Klein’s one is the brand I prefer to buy in this category as it is both a mens’ perfume as well as womens’ perfume.

Based on occasions: you should always wear perfumes based on different occasions. some are a lot heavier than others. Light and refreshing fragrances are good for daytime wear and the summer months, whereas warmer, more sensual scents are perfect for evenings and special occasions e.g. the Little black dress perfume or Elizabeth Ardens Provocative woman. Wear scents like chocolate, strawberry or fruity smells for a day out at the beach. whereas, if you are in a business meeting you need to keep it subtle and go for musky, woody and more earthy scents.

Whatever perfume you wear always remember overdoing it only makes it uncomfortable for others in the vicinity. Just remember, you just have to spread a whiff not reinforce your brand.

However, this list is not exhaustive so I recommend buying cheaper testers or handbag-sized bottles. this can be a great way of trying something new without spending a fortune.

Angel cologne. This is one of the sweetest smelling colognes imaginable. She might even think you’re wearing perfume.

Joop cologne. While many people love the smell, others are equally turned off. Avoid anything polarizing.

Armani Code. A crisp, clean smell that doesn’t come off too strong.

Hugo Boss cologne. another similar, neutrally pleasant scent that won’t send a fierce message one way or another.

They call Estee Lauder Beautiful Perfume the fragrance of a thousand flowers. it got this name because they used over 2000 different flowers when perfecting this scent. it did take some time to get the right blend of flowers though because they had to work with creative experts who knew which blends worked best. I have used perfumes for more than 10 years and I would like to share with you the world’s best women’s fragrances, highly rated by Top fashion magazines and reviewers, and I have chosen 5 of my all time favourites which I still use till now.

Angel Perfumes by Thierry Mugler

In Paris, Thierry Mugler, age 20, was a window designer for a trendy boutique and a freelance stylist for various fashion houses. he presented his first collection in 1973, which was well received, and subsequently started up the fashion house that bears his name. his style is always avant-garde and angels are his recurring theme, symbolizing the qualities he sees in woman – soft yet strong, innocent yet seductive. his first perfume, Angel, was designed to be quite different from others at that time – essentially it should not fade away when fashions changed. Angel is classified as a refreshing, oriental, woody fragrance. This feminine scent possesses a blend of vanilla, sandalwood, and patchouli. Accompanied by fruity notes of fresh citrus, melons, peaches, and plums The bottle was to be based on a star of blue-tinged crystal, another of Mugler’s concepts, but for contrast with the coldness of the glass the perfume was to be warm and earthy, reminiscent of childhood experiences of fairgrounds, cotton candy, and chocolate mixed with an elixir of fruit and caramel. it took 18 months to devise this complicated fragrance, which is issued in up to eau de parfum concentration.

Joy Perfume is launched by the design house of Jean Patou in 1930. Jean Patou was a great innovator. Born in 1887, he moved to Paris in 1910 founded his fashion and perfume house in 1919, and died in 1936 aged 49. he was essentially a man of the 1920s an 1930s and he seems to have come into the fashion world quite suddenly, for we hear little of him until he presented his first collection in 1919. in 1930, Jean Patou wanted to send a gift to his many regular international clients who he knew would be unable to visit Paris that year. he asked Almeras to create something very strong and simple, and it has to be made regardless of the cost of the ingredients. it is the quality of the rose and jasmine used which makes Joy so special; one ounce, it is said, requires over 10,000 jasmine flowers and 28 dozen roses. Joy is classified as a refined, flowery fragrance. This feminine scent possesses a blend of rare oils including jasmine and rose. but Joy does not just smell of Rose and Jasmine, it smells huge, luscious and utterly wonderful. it is suitable for daily use, work and evening wear.

Dune Perfumes by Christian Dior

Christian Dior established Parfums Dior with the launch of miss Dior in 1947. he had always been attracted to fragrances and once confessed that as a child he had never dreamed of becoming a dress-designer; his early memories of women were not of their dresses but the perfumes they wore. Altogether Parfums Christian Dior has launched 18 fragrances and Dior perfumes are always innovative, designed to set new trends. L’Heure Bleue is a blend of roses, iris, and jasmine. L’Heure Bleue is most certainly a feminine, timeless stunner. For women favoring subtle, slightly sweet and even less spicy fragrances, this classic scent must be tried.
